The only aircraft carrier in the French military's arsenal, Charles de Gaulle, has just sailed from the Mediterranean port of Toulon and is heading towards the Persian Gulf where it will participate in operations against the Islamic State in Syria, reports the Patria News Agency.
France has 12 aircraft participating in airstrikes from bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, and 20 more will come with the carrier.
The largest aircraft carrier in Europe will also fill the void left by the withdrawal of the American USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is expected to leave the region soon. It will be replaced by the USS Harry Truman, whose arrival is announced for the beginning of next year.
French President François Hollande said on Monday that Charles de Gaulle will strengthen France's firepower in the region.
