(Patria) - About twenty French ships set sail from Marseille on Saturday to join an international flotilla challenging the Israeli blockade and attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, AFP reported.
"Gaza, Marseille is with you," shouted about a thousand people who came to the docks to support the initiative.
The ships, mostly sailboats, departed to applause and song shortly after 5:00 PM (3:00 PM GMT) to join the "Global Freedom Flotilla," named after a fisherman from Gaza.
The international flotilla of about a hundred boats, mostly setting sail from Barcelona on April 12, will head towards Gaza around April 20, according to organizers. A one-week stop in southern Italy is planned for "non-violent training".
"The goal is to give Palestine greater visibility. We are not talking much about it right now, due to the international context," said Manon, a crew member who refused to give her full name.
At the end of 2025, the Israeli navy boarded a flotilla of about fifty boats, composed of political figures and activists such as Greta Thunberg from Sweden, which is illegal according to the organizers and Amnesty International.
Israel then arrested and deported the crew members.
