(Patria) - The French prosecutor's office for the fight against terrorism announced on Wednesday that it has opened an investigation for possible war crimes and crimes against humanity after an AFP video journalist was killed on Tuesday in shelling near Chasiv Yar, in eastern Ukraine.
Arman Soldin, 32, who was born in Sarajevo, was a French citizen and began working for AFP as an intern in its Rome office in 2015, later being employed in London. He was part of the first AFP team sent to Ukraine after the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, arriving the next day. Soldin had been living in Ukraine since September, leading the team's video reporting and regularly traveling to the front lines in the east and south.
His death means at least 11 journalists or fixers and drivers for media teams reporting on the war in Ukraine have been killed, according to media advocacy groups Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), agencies reported.
