Film 'Men Don't Cry' is BiH's Candidate for the Oscar

The Association of Filmmakers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo and the Foundation for Cinematography, organized the selection of this year's BiH candidate for the Oscar award of the American Film Academy. The commission voted to select the candidate, which is the film 'Men Don't Cry' by Alen Drljević.

The Oscar award is presented by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), and the award ceremony is one of the most-watched television programs during the year in the USA.

The film 'Men Don't Cry' had its world premiere this year at the International Film Festival Karlovy Vary, where it won the Special Jury Prize and the Europa Cinemas Label. The film was successfully screened at this year's Sarajevo Film Festival as part of the Competition Program, and will be distributed in cinemas in Bosnia and Herzegovina in September this year.

This film features Boris Isaković, Leon Lučev, Emir Hadžihafizbegović, Sebastian Cavazza, Ermin Bravo, Boris Ler, Ivo Gregurević, Primož Petkovšek, Jasna Đuričić and Izudin Bajrović. The screenplay authors are Alen Drljević and Zoran Solomun, and the film's producers are Damir Ibrahimović and Jasmila Žbanić. Editing is by Vladimir Gojun, and the director of photography is Erol Zubčević.

The members of the commission, previously confirmed by the American Academy, were Ines Tanović, Danis Tanović, Mustafa Mustafić, Nedžad Begović, Tina Šmalcelj, Redžinald Šimek, Ratko Orozović, Nermin Hamzagić and Predrag Solomun.

The Association of Filmmakers of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been submitting a film to the American Academy in the category for Best Foreign Language Film for 15 years. We recall that in 2001, the film 'NO MAN'S LAND' by Danis Tanović was nominated upon the candidacy of the Association of Filmmakers, and in March 2002 it was awarded the prestigious Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

We recall that, according to the rules of the American Academy, the opportunity to apply was available to producers of BiH feature films that were distributed between October 1, 2016 and October 1, 2017 in cinemas in Bosnia and Herzegovina for at least seven consecutive days, which have DCP or 35-millimeter copies of the films, and which are predominantly in the language of the country on behalf of which they are being submitted.
