FBI launched investigation after Trump campaign said it was hacked by Iran

(Patria) - The US FBI announced on Monday that it has launched an investigation after Donald Trump's campaign said its internal communications were hacked and blamed the Iranian government, Reuters reported.

The former president said on Saturday that Microsoft had informed the campaign that Iran had hacked one of its websites. Trump said Iran "is only able to get publicly available information".

The FBI is also investigating an alleged hacking attack targeting advisors in the campaigns of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

The FBI began the investigation in June, when Biden was still a presidential candidate, suspecting Iran was behind attempts to steal data from two US presidential campaigns, the newspaper stated, citing sources.

The Iranian government denied hacking Trump's campaign.

Trump's campaign pointed to a report by Microsoft researchers on Friday indicating that hackers linked to the Iranian government attempted to break into the profile of a "high-ranking official" in the US presidential campaign in June. The report added that hackers took over a profile belonging to a former political advisor and then used it to target officials.
