European Union delivers over 980,000 shells to Ukraine

(Patria) - The European Union has delivered over 980,000 shells to Ukraine, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

Borrell told the Ukrainian newspaper "European Pravda" that the target of delivering a total of one million shells will be reached "very soon," reports RFE/RL.

- I know we committed to reaching this level by spring - and we didn't succeed. But we can do it by the end of the year - Borrell said.

Borrell visited Kyiv on November 9 to try to reassure Ukraine of Brussels' support. It was the first visit by a senior European official after Republican Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election.

Trump's victory worries Ukraine and Europe, who fear that the new US president will end Washington's support for Kyiv in its fight against the Russian invasion, AFP reports.

- The message is clear. Europeans will continue to support Ukraine. We have supported Ukraine from the beginning, and for my last visit to Ukraine, I convey the same message. We will support you as much as we can - Borrell said on November 9.

During the election campaign, Trump questioned the continuation of large US military and financial aid to Ukraine, saying he could quickly reach a deal to end the war.

- No one knows exactly what the new (US) administration will do - Borrell said, noting that outgoing US President Joe Biden still has two months to make decisions.

Borrell added that the EU should use this opportunity to build a stronger and more united Europe and to support Ukraine.

Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, Europe has spent about $125 billion to support Ukraine, while the US has allocated more than $90 billion, according to a study by the Kiel Institute.
