SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The European Union today rejected US President Donald Trump's peace plan for the Middle East and expressed concern over Israel's intention to seize more territory from the Palestinians.
Trump's plan, released last week, envisages the formation of a Palestinian state, but does not meet the minimum demands of the Palestinians, and a large part of the occupied territories in the West Bank would remain with Israel.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced that the EU continues to insist on the formation of two states with the border that existed until 1967, leaving open the possibility that Israel and an independent and sovereign Palestinian state could eventually agree on an exchange of some territories.
According to him, Trump's plan deviates from internationally agreed parameters.
"To achieve a just and lasting peace, the final status issue must be resolved through direct talks between the parties to the process, which includes agreement on the border, the status of Jerusalem, and the issue of refugees," said Borrell.
World agencies recall that Trump's plan was welcomed and praised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but was rejected as "nonsensical" by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Arab states from the Persian Gulf did the same.
