European Commission tightens visa rules for Russian citizens

(Patria) - The European Commission announced yesterday that it is tightening visa rules for Russian citizens due to increased security risks.

Stricter rules will now apply to Russian citizens seeking visas to travel to the European Union.

- Travel to the EU and movement within the EU is a privilege, not something that is taken for granted - stated High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

Russian citizens will no longer be able to obtain multiple-entry visas, meaning they will have to apply for a new visa each time they plan to travel to the EU.

Stricter rules are being introduced to reduce the danger to public order and internal security. At the same time, certain exceptions are foreseen for independent journalists and human rights activists.

- According to the new rules, all visa applications from Russian citizens will be subject to enhanced verification procedures and an increased level of control. This will contribute to the integrity and security of the Schengen area - says Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner.

The European Commission points out that Russia, among other things, is using migration as a weapon against the EU.

- Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine has created the most dangerous security environment in Europe in decades. We are now facing unprecedented drone incursions and sabotage on our territory. It is our duty to protect the citizens of the EU - Kallas said.
