(Patria) - Former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt (93) and his wife died on the same day at their home in Nijmegen, local media reported yesterday, adding that it was likely euthanasia.
Van Agt and his wife Eugenie were the same age and had been married for 70 years. They died on Monday and have already been buried within the family.
Euthanasia has been legal in the Netherlands since 2001 under certain conditions.
Van Agt had been in poor health since a stroke in 2019.
He served as the Christian democratic Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 1977 to 1982.
He also spent many years advocating for Palestinian rights and sharply criticized his party's policy towards Israel, which he left in 2021.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte paid tribute to Van Agt, saying he gave Dutch politics color and substance.
