(Patria) - The European Union advises its citizens to collect basic emergency supplies that will enable them to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in case of war or another major emergency. This recommendation is part of a new report on Europe's civil and military preparedness, prepared by former Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, as a special advisor to the President of the European Commission.
The report, published on Wednesday, warns that the EU was not sufficiently prepared for previous crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's aggression against Ukraine, and emphasizes the importance of transitioning to a more proactive approach to preparedness. As part of the new strategy, EU citizens should have supplies of basic necessities such as food, drinks, medicines, a flashlight, and a battery-powered radio to survive at least three days without external assistance.
Recommendations also include providing guidance to citizens on evacuation methods, access to emergency services, and how to collect supplies. This approach aims to prepare the EU population for various types of threats, from pandemics and extreme weather events to possible armed conflicts. The COVID-19 pandemic showed how quickly shortages of essential items can occur, further highlighting the need to improve preparedness.
