EU hosts meeting of Azerbaijan and Armenia after Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

(Patria) - Brussels will host high-level envoys from Azerbaijan and Armenia on Tuesday, the European Union announced.

Simon Mordue, chief diplomatic adviser to the President of the European Council Charles Michel, will chair the talks, Michel's spokesperson said, as reported by AFP.

Azerbaijan and Armenia, together with the largest EU powers France and Germany, will be represented by their national security advisers.

The EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Estonian diplomat Toivo Klaar, will also attend.
Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a three-decade conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, predominantly populated by ethnic Armenians. But last week, in a lightning offensive, government forces established control, and Armenian fighters began to disarm.

Tuesday's meeting in Brussels will be the first such encounter since the offensive, and a meeting of the leaders of both countries is planned for next month.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev are due to attend the European Political Community summit in Granada, Spain, on October 5.
