(Patria) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reacted sharply towards Israel after the recent attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex. He said that Turkey will not remain silent and called on Israel to stop the attacks.
He emphasized that the Palestinian people are not alone and that Israel is pursuing a "policy of oppression".
"Turkey cannot remain silent in the face of attacks. Reaching for the Al-Aqsa Mosque and trampling on the sanctity of Haram al-Sharif is our red line," Erdogan said.
His statements came after tensions escalated when Israeli police detained about 350 worshippers inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex.
A group of Palestinians barricaded themselves inside the Al-Qibli prayer hall in the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex after Jewish settlers called for a raid on the mosque. They tried to prevent the police from entering by closing the doors.
Surrounding the Al-Qibli prayer hall, Israeli police climbed onto the mosque's roof, broke windows, and initially used stun grenades against the worshippers inside.
Some people in the mosque tried to resist the police by throwing fireworks.
"I condemn the vile acts against the first qibla of Muslims and call for the attacks to be stopped as soon as possible," Erdogan said.
