(Patria) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday that he welcomes the extension of the ceasefire between the US and Iran, adding that he believes that the disputed issues between the parties can be resolved, according to a statement from the Turkish presidency, Reuters reported.
NATO member Turkey, which borders Iran, has been in close contact with Washington, Tehran, and mediator Pakistan to achieve an end to the war. It has called for an end to the conflict and conveyed messages between the parties.
Trump had previously said that negotiations with Iran were "in the final stages," warning of further attacks unless Tehran agreed to a peace deal.
"During the meeting, our president said that he considers the decision to extend the ceasefire in the conflict zone in our region a positive development and believes that a reasonable solution to the disputed issues is possible," the presidency's statement said.
Erdogan called renewed stability in Syria an "important gain" for the region, adding that he called for steps to prevent the situation in Lebanon from deteriorating amid continued fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
Erdogan also told Trump that preparations for the NATO summit, to be held in Ankara in July, are continuing and that Turkey is working to make the meeting "successful in every aspect," the Turkish Presidency announced.
The two also discussed bilateral relations, it added.
Trump later said he had a "very good" conversation with Erdogan, adding that the two have a very good relationship.
"Isn't it nice to have relationships with some very tough people? He is a tough guy, and I have a relationship with him that nobody else has," Trump said.
"I think he has been a great ally. Some people doubt that, but I think he has been a great ally."
