Erdogan on teleconference discussed Iran with Trump and regional leaders

(Patria) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a teleconference early Sunday with US President Donald Trump and regional leaders on Iran and developments in the Middle East, the Turkish Directorate of Communications announced.

The meeting was also attended by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Chief of Staff of the Pakistani Army Asim Munir, and members of the US government.

The meeting came after Trump's announcement that a deal with Iran to end the war between the two countries had been largely negotiated but was awaiting finalization, reports Anadolija.

Erdogan welcomed the fact that the diplomatic process with Iran had reached the level mentioned by Trump.

Referring to the countries that contributed to the negotiations, Erdogan said that any agreement with Iran that ensures free passage through the Strait of Hormuz would contribute to regional stability.

Ankara will provide all necessary support for the implementation of any agreement with Tehran, Erdogan confirmed.

Turkey aspires to a new era in which the countries of the region do not pose a threat to each other, he said, emphasizing that a just peace has no losers.

Erdogan added that Turkey has always advocated for resolving problems through dialogue and diplomacy.

He stressed that Turkey is working to establish peace in the region and believes that appropriate solutions can be found over time for issues that seem difficult, including the Iranian nuclear problem.

The US and Iran are negotiating proposals and counter-proposals through Islamabad to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as well as to resolve issues related to Iran's nuclear program and Tehran's demands for the lifting of sanctions.

Trump said on Monday that the US had postponed renewed attacks on Iran following requests from Gulf leaders and that serious negotiations were underway.
