(Patria) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Hamas is not a terrorist group but a patriotic organization defending its territories and people.
"They are warriors (mujahideen)," Erdogan said.
He also stated that Turkey "is not indebted to Israel. But the West is".
"I will not visit Israel," Erdogan emphasized during a speech in the Turkish Parliament.
The Turkish President spoke by phone two days ago with the head of the Hamas Political Bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, Anadolu reported.
According to a statement from the Turkish Directorate of Communications, the two leaders discussed the situation in Gaza and current developments.
Erdogan stated that Turkey is making efforts to ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza and that wounded Palestinians can be treated in Turkey when necessary.
He added that Ankara is trying to secure a ceasefire in the region as soon as possible.
