(Patria) - Swedish police said today that "about ten people" were killed in an attack at an adult education school in Sweden, and that they believe the attacker is among the dead.
Although the motives of the attacker are still unknown, the police stated that they believe he acted alone and that it is most likely not a terrorist attack.
- The deceased are being identified - said the head of local police in Örebro, Roberto Eid Forest.
The shooting occurred in the city of Örebro, about 200 kilometers west of Stockholm, at the Risbergska school for adults who have not completed formal education or did not have good enough grades to continue higher education.
The school is located on a campus that also houses schools for children.
Maria Pegado, a 54-year-old teacher, said that someone opened the door to her classroom immediately after the lunch break and shouted for everyone to get out.
- I led all 15 of my students into the hallway and we started running. Then I heard two shots, but we got out. We were near the school entrance.
I saw people pulling out the wounded, first one then another. I realized it was very serious - Pegado told Reuters by phone.
No police officers were injured in the shooting, the police said.
- Emergency services, rescue services and police are at the scene - said a spokesperson for local rescue services.
- We have received four patients, but we cannot say anything about the condition of the wounded, they were admitted to the emergency department at the University Hospital, said a spokesperson for the Örebro region to Reuters.
Swedish Minister of Justice Gunnar Strommer told Reuters that the government is in close contact with the police and is closely monitoring developments.
- The information about the violent attack in Örebro is very serious - Strommer emphasized.
Sweden is facing a series of shootings and bombings caused by an endemic problem of criminal gangs, although deadly attacks in schools are still rare.
According to data from the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, ten people were killed in seven incidents of deadly violence in schools between 2010 and 2022.
In one of the most prominent such crimes in the past decade, a 21-year-old masked attacker, driven by racist motives, killed a teaching assistant and a boy and wounded two other people in 2015.
