(Patria) - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with the new President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, for the first time on the sidelines of a summit held in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss the reconstruction of Gaza, Arab media reported.
Al-Sharaa, who was once part of an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, has been seeking the support of Arab and Western leaders since leading the opposition offensive that ousted former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
Al-Sisi has been cracking down on extremists in the most populous Arab country, which has broad influence in the Middle East and is a close ally of the United States.
Cairo has been cautious in its response to the new rulers in Syria, whom state media have criticized.
Syria's state news agency said Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani also attended the meeting, but gave no further details about the agenda.
