The Pentagon will send two Guantanamo detainees to Montenegro and BiH to start new lives, in the latest effort to close the notorious prison, Reuters reports.
A Pentagon statement said that a third detainee, Mohammed Bawazir, refused to board the flight to Europe and therefore remained at the US base in Cuba.
One Egyptian with serious health problems was transferred to BiH, and a detainee from Yemen to Montenegro, the US Department stated, adding that neither could return to their country of origin.
The Pentagon did not state why Bawazir refused relocation to the country intended for him, which was not named, and lawyer John Chandler stated that he insisted on being sent to one of several countries where he has relatives, as he could not return to Yemen.
In total, US authorities have released 91 detainees from Guantanamo so far. The two detainees transferred today to BiH and Montenegro are part of a group of 17 detainees who will leave Guantanamo this month.
