Đukanović received Sánchez: Admission of Western Balkan countries is the best EU investment

(Patria) - The admission of Western Balkan countries is the best investment of the European Union in peace, said President Milo Đukanović after a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Cetinje. Đukanović added that the Spanish embassy in Belgrade is opening a representative office in Podgorica, which is a step further in the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"The only good choice for the future of the Balkans is the European Union, said Đukanović.

"We agreed that Montenegro has progressed compared to other countries in the region on the path to the EU and is in a better position. The admission of Western Balkan countries is the best investment of the European Union in peace," said Đukanović.

He added that the Ukrainian experience warns Europe that it must not neglect its close neighborhood.

"We do not expect any shortcuts on the path to EU membership, we are ready to remove all obstacles," he said.

Đukanović added that the Spanish embassy in Belgrade is opening a representative office in Podgorica, at the level of a chargé d'affaires.

"We believe that this is the first step towards raising this representative office to the ambassadorial level," he said.

Montenegro will improve bilateral cooperation with Spain at multiple levels.

"By opening a Cervantes department in Montenegro, we will ensure a better acquaintance with Spanish culture and that country in general," he said.

Pedro Sánchez said he was pleased to be a guest of Montenegro. He said he was satisfied with Montenegro's response regarding the war in Ukraine.
