Donald Trump wants to arm teachers in schools

WASHINGTON, (Patria) - US President Donald Trump hinted that arming teachers could help prevent massacres like last week's mass shooting at a Florida high school.

Trump expressed support for the idea during an emotional meeting at the White House with students who survived the shooting and a parent whose child did not, reports Hina.

- If you had a teacher who was skilled with firearms, it could end the attack very quickly - said Trump, admitting that the idea is controversial.

He sat in the middle of a semicircle in the White House's state dining room, listening intently as students cried and called for change. He promised to take measures to improve background checks for those buying firearms.

Six students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where an armed man killed 17 students and teachers on February 14 with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, in the second deadliest attack at a US public school, were present at the meeting.

- Please, please let's not let this happen ever again - said Zeif.

Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow Pollack (18) was killed, shouted:

- There should have been one school shooting and we should have solved it. I am angry because I will not see my daughter again.

Trump said his administration will focus on background checks and mental health of those buying firearms in an effort to make schools safer.

- We will be very tough on checks, strengthening checks, and putting a strong emphasis on mental health - said Trump.

- It won't just be talk like it has been in the past - he said.

Trump's support for any tightening of gun laws would mean a change for the Republican, who was endorsed by the National Rifle Association during the 2016 presidential campaign.

- I don't understand why I can still go into a store and buy a weapon of war, an AR - said Sam Zeif (18), sobbing.
