Donald Trump dismisses National Security Advisor John Bolton

(Patria) – US President Donald Trump has dismissed John Bolton from the position of National Security Advisor, citing 'deep disagreements' as the reason.  

Trump announced the news via Twitter just an hour after it was announced that Bolton would appear at a press conference with the Secretary of State.

Shortly after the news was announced, Bolton stated and then continued to insist that he offered his resignation on Monday evening, but that Trump suggested they discuss it the following day.

While Bolton and Trump agreed on the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran and the intermediate-range nuclear forces treaty with Russia, they failed to reach an agreement on most other national security issues.

It seems Bolton did not agree with Trump's direct approach, even when it came to traditional American adversaries like Russia, North Korea, and the Afghan Taliban, which involves meetings and direct negotiations instead of intimidation with military force, writes The Guardian.

Trump announced that he will select the new, fourth National Security Advisor next week, and media are already speculating that candidates could include US Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, Iran envoy Brian Hook, and Robert Blair, assistant to Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

The departure of Bolton, whose policies were considered aggressive as he advocated for military response or intervention for most interstate problems, is seen by Western media as an opportunity for new diplomacy with Iran, which was recently confirmed by Trump himself when he stated he was ready to meet with Rouhani.

Trump was initially impressed by Bolton's way of thinking, which is why he appointed him in 2018, but over time he began to be bothered by his aggressive stance, once commenting in the Oval Office in front of other officials: 'There isn't a war John doesn't like,' writes The Guardian.
