During a meeting with Netanyahu in New York, Trump told the Israeli prime minister that the US would "recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel".

Contrary to custom, the media did not have access to the one-hour meeting between the two political figures, reportedly at the request of Donald Trump.

Trump's statement that the ancient city belongs to Israel was published on his website after the meeting.

Trump's campaign "accepts that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people for more than 3,000 years, and that the United States, with the Trump administration, will finally accept the mandate of Congress to recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel."

During the meeting, Trump drew a parallel between the separation barrier - the border in Israel, and the wall he plans to build on the US-Mexican border. He praised the 440-mile wall, emphasizing that it has proven to be "successful".

Netanyahu also met with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
