House of Lords discusses Dodik's spreading of rumours and possible re-engagement of British personnel in EUFOR

(Patria) - The British House of Lords discussed the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina today, reports N1.

A special focus during the discussion was on the president of the BiH entity RS, Milorad Dodik, and the court proceedings against him.

Support for the EUFOR mission, as well as the actions taken by the High Representative in BiH, was reiterated.

Further support was also expressed for the efforts of the UK Government in the Balkans and the special envoy recently appointed by it.

- We have been very clear. I know that Dodik has been spreading rumours that British forces are somehow involved in his arrest.

These are unfounded claims and part of Dodik's campaign of distortion and disinformation clearly designed to distract from his destructive actions.

The issue of charges against him is a matter for the authority of the High Representative - stated Lord Ray Collins (Labour), Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

He stated that the stability and maintenance of the rule of law in BiH are a key focus of the UK Government and that Dodik's recent actions have attempted to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

- The Constitutional Court has suspended these unconstitutional laws. We support all citizens, communities, and politicians who are focused on the reforms needed for progress, rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric - emphasized Collins.

Lord John Browne (Labour) said that it is clear that tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina have significantly increased following the recent issuance of an arrest warrant for Milorad Dodik.

Given the strategic importance of BiH, as evidenced by Dodik's recent visit to Moscow, he asked whether the re-engagement of British personnel for EUFOR and Operation Althea is being considered.

Collins replied that the UK Government has made it clear that, despite no longer participating in the Mission, it continues to play a key role in maintaining a secure environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- We are open to exploring enhanced cooperation with the EU, including its operations and missions, as we strengthen the United Kingdom's security and defence relations with the EU.

If we decide to cooperate more closely with EU missions and operations, including EUFOR, we will assess the potential for UK contribution on a case-by-case basis and where it is in line with UK interests - said Collins.

Lord Jeremy Purvis (Liberal Democrats) stated that "the Western Balkans are of crucial importance to the future of the UK's national security interests, especially in the context of Russian interference, organized crime, and migration".

Collins said that the UK has been engaged in a wide range of different areas and in development and soft power to contribute to peace and stability in the Western Balkans, and particularly in BiH.

- Our development efforts have never been solely about aid. We mobilize a range of resources to achieve our development goals in the Western Balkans, and we will continue to do so - added Collins.
