Some US troops leaving Syria

(Patria) - Some American troops are leaving Syria as part of an "intentional and conditions-based transition," a senior US official said on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the US is withdrawing all of its approximately 1,000 soldiers from Syria.

"US forces remain prepared to respond to any ISIS threats that emerge in the region as we support partner-led efforts to prevent the resurgence of the terrorist network," said a senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"However, a larger US presence is no longer necessary in Syria given the Syrian government's readiness to assume primary responsibility for combating the terrorist threat within its borders," the official added.

Last week, the US military announced it had completed its withdrawal from a strategic base in Syria, handing it over to Syrian forces, in the latest sign of strengthening US-Syrian ties that could enable further US withdrawal.
