(Patria) - On average, ten children in the Gaza Strip lose a leg or both every day, warns the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini.
- Every day, we have an average of ten children who lose one or both legs - Lazzarini told a press conference in Geneva.
He points out that these figures do not include children who lose an arm or a hand, and adds that these figures are based on UNICEF data.
- Ten a day, that's almost 2,000 children after more than 260 days of this brutal war. We know that most of the time amputations are performed in terrible conditions and sometimes without any anesthesia, and this applies to children as well - Lazzarini says.
He also mentioned a report by the non-governmental organization "Save the Children", which states that since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip, "up to 21,000 children have disappeared", whether they are buried under rubble, captured, buried in anonymous graves, or have lost contact with families and loved ones.
Although these data are difficult to collect and verify, at least 17,000 children are unaccompanied by an adult, and about 4,000 are likely missing under the rubble, according to that organization.
