Ten countries to recognise Palestine on Monday: Macron spoke with Palestinian President Abbas

(Patria) - Ten countries, including France and Great Britain, will recognise the Palestinian state on Monday at the annual summit of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, AFP reports.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on X that he spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and informed him of the recognition of Palestine.

More than 140 world leaders will gather next week in New York for the annual summit of the United Nations General Assembly, which this year will be dominated by the future of the Palestinians and Gaza.

The Palestinian president was denied a US visa, so he will not attend the UN General Assembly. He is expected to address the assembly via video link.

The humanitarian catastrophe and genocide ravaging the small Palestinian territory will be at the top of the agenda, two years after the start of the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, AFP reports.

Saudi Arabia and France will co-chair meetings from Monday on the Israeli-Palestinian two-state solution, which aims for both sides to exist side by side in peace.

The French presidency announced on Friday that at the meeting, 10 countries will formally recognise Palestinian statehood - Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Portugal, Malta, Great Britain and San Marino, along with France.
