Delcy Rodríguez sworn in as interim president of Venezuela

(Patria) - Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in yesterday as interim president of Venezuela, two days after the US arrested President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in Caracas.

- I will not rest my hand nor my soul until I see Venezuela fulfill its just destiny, as a free, sovereign, and independent nation.

I swear to the people of Venezuela that I will not rest until I guarantee peace and tranquility for the Republic - Rodríguez said during the swearing-in ceremony.

Rodríguez is the first woman to assume the office of president of Venezuela.

After taking the oath, she stated that she attended the ceremony "with sadness for the suffering inflicted on the people" of the country after the "illegitimate military aggression of the USA".

The US arrested Maduro and his wife Cilia in a military operation in Caracas on Saturday, January 3rd, around two o'clock in the morning local time.

They were taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York, where they will be held during their trial on charges of drug and arms trafficking, which began yesterday.
