GENEVA, (Patria) - United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said that a "golden opportunity was missed" after two weeks of peace talks on Syria in Geneva ended without progress, world agencies report.
De Mistura told reporters that there were no real discussions between the Syrian government and the opposition, despite his team trying to encourage them with "various creative formulas," AP reports.
He accused the delegation of the Syrian government, which arrived in Geneva, of setting preconditions for talks with the opposition and not wanting to discuss anything other than terrorism.
AP reminds that the administration of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad calls all those who oppose him terrorists.
De Mistura adds that the opposition wanted to discuss other topics as well, such as elections, the Constitution, and state leadership.
The envoy concluded, admitting failure, that they must come up with "new ideas for future peace talks."
