Lest We Forget: Monster Ljubiša Beara Celebrated His 56th Birthday Killing Srebrenica Residents

Ljubiša Beara was born on July 14, 1939 in Sarajevo, and died at the age of 78. In May 1992, he was appointed head of security of the Main Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska, at the same time when Ratko Mladić became commander of the Main Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS). During the VRS attack on the Srebrenica enclave, the killings and executions that followed, Beara held the rank of colonel and was the head of security of the VRS Main Staff. From July 13 to July 16, 1995, he was present in the areas of Bratunac and Zvornik.

Ljubiša Beara was an officer of the KOS, and his criminal path began during the attack by Milošević's soldateska on Dubrovnik.

The duties of Ljubiša Beara as head of security, entrusted to him by his commander and VRS commander Ratko Mladić and defined by the regulations of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) on security affairs adopted by the VRS, were to monitor enemy activities within VRS units and against VRS units, and to propose measures to his superiors to respond to threats to security by the enemy.

This included both detecting traitors and other internal security threats in VRS units, as well as thwarting enemy threats outside the VRS, such as sabotage, surveillance and intervention activities by the enemy. He was responsible for commanding the Military Police units of the Main Staff and for proposing ways to engage the Military Police.

On a general level, he was also responsible for coordinating with the bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the zones of responsibility of the six VRS corps. Ljubiša Beara was also responsible for captured Bosnian Muslims from Srebrenica in the period from July 11, 1995 to November 1, 1995.

In the days following the attack on Srebrenica, VRS forces captured, detained, summarily executed and buried more than 7,000 men and boys, Bosnian Muslims from the Srebrenica enclave, and forcibly displaced Bosnian Muslim women and children from Srebrenica outside the enclave.

Ljubiša Beara, together with other VRS and MUP officers and units, was a member and knowing participant in a joint criminal enterprise, the common purpose of which was, among other things, to forcibly displace women and children from the Srebrenica enclave to Kladanj on July 12 and 13, 1995; and to capture, detain, summarily execute by firing squad, bury and rebury thousands of Bosnian Muslim men and boys aged 16 to 60 from the Srebrenica enclave, in the period from July 12, 1995 to July 19, 1995 or approximately that date.

Beara was the only one who departed from Belgrade to The Hague from the VIP lounge of Belgrade Airport on a special plane, accompanied by Serbian Minister of Justice Zoran Stojković and, until boarding the plane, by a camera of the Government of Serbia, and at Rotterdam Airport at two in the morning he was personally awaited by Carla del Ponte.

Beara celebrated his 56th birthday killing civilians in Srebrenica. 

"Criminal genius," as Hague investigators claim, he devised and carried out the execution of more than seven thousand Bosniaks in Srebrenica. During the attack on that protected enclave, Beara took on the role of direct coordinator of all criminal activities, fully demonstrating his abilities.
