Čović and Zvizdić arrived in Brussels, talked with Varhely

(Patria) - Speaker of the House of Representatives Denis Zvizdić and Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Čović talked today in Brussels with the European Union's Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi.

During the meeting, the officials discussed the current political situation, positive relations, and the steps Bosnia and Herzegovina is taking on its European path.

Zvizdić and Čović expressed BiH's full commitment to further advancing the European integration process, economic development, strengthening the rule of law, and improving relations in the region, with a particular focus on fulfilling the conditions for BiH to obtain candidate status.

Zvizdić stated that European integration is the most effective instrument for adopting European values, preserving stability, and accelerating economic growth and development, as well as regional cooperation, and that therefore, the path to full membership for BiH has no alternative.

Čović emphasized the importance of European integration in light of strengthening BiH's internal stability, the fact that the BiH Council of Ministers has been formed, thereby creating conditions for continuing activities on implementing priorities on the path of European integration, and expressed expectations that the election law will be agreed upon by the beginning of April this year, which will also enable the holding of elections in Mostar. 

Commissioner Varhely also stressed that the upcoming summit in Zagreb during Croatia's presidency of the European Union is an opportunity to focus on the Western Balkans region and to foster the development of education and the economy. He highlighted concerns about the migrant influx into the region.

On this occasion, Čović and Zvizdić said that the country is facing this problem and that BiH continues to expect assistance from the EU, as well as increased engagement from all institutions to bring the entry and movement of migrants under control.

During the meeting, the interlocutors expressed BiH's full commitment to membership in the European Union. Emphasizing the necessity of dialogue, cooperation, and political stability, they stressed that reforms are a key step towards ensuring the conditions for achieving concrete progress in fulfilling foreign policy goals.
