Entire course of the Danube in Austria closed to navigation due to floods

(Patria) - The entire course of the Danube in Austria has been closed to navigation due to floods caused by heavy rains in Austria and neighboring Germany.

The decision was announced by the state-owned waterway company "Via Donau".

- Safety cannot be guaranteed above a certain water level. How long the measures will remain in force depends on further rainfall and water levels in the Danube's tributaries - company spokesman Christoph Caspar told the DPA news agency.

The Danube in Austria is over 350 kilometers long, from the Bavarian border town of Passau to the Slovak capital Bratislava, which lies right on the border.

The closure has forced some cruise ships to dock in Linz, where the Danube overflowed its banks today.

Some roads have also been closed. In Schärding, which lies on the Inn River, a tributary of the Danube, defenses have been reinforced to prevent major flooding.

A slight rise in water levels has also been recorded in the upper reaches of the Danube in Austria, and experts expect the situation to calm down soon.
