CAIRO, (Patria) - Foreign ministers of Arab countries stated at the Arab League meeting in Cairo that Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine for them, despite the US intending to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The American president announced the imminent relocation of the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which would practically mean that the US recognizes Jerusalem as the main Israeli city. Such a decision has caused mass protests across Gaza and the West Bank, as well as in many other Muslim countries.
- The Arab League has already decided to oppose the decision to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and to recognize the occupied city as the capital of Israel - said the head of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas recently presented a plan to the UN Security Council for the formation of two states, Palestine and Israel, within the 1967 borders.
Israel annexed the eastern part of Jerusalem after occupying it in the 1967 war.
The international community has never recognized the annexation, and the Palestinians plan for the seat of their future state, which would encompass the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, to be in East Jerusalem.
