Cells of Zenica prison where members of Young Bosnia were held are decaying

This summer marks 103 years since Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Yugoslav organization Young Bosnia, carried out the assassination of Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, writes the Patria news agency. 

The assassination was carried out on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo and is known as the Sarajevo assassination. The event triggered the start of World War I and entered world history. It is believed that members of Young Bosnia were under the control of the organization „Black Hand" from Serbia. 

There are several places in Bosnia and Herzegovina that today evoke the tragic event of 1914, including the Museum in Sarajevo, as well as the cells in Zenica prison. None of these places are sufficiently exploited for tourism today.

For example, in Zenica prison there are still cells where some members of Young Bosnia were detained. It is said that Gavrilo Princip also spent some time in Zenica before being transferred to the Terezin prison in the Czech Republic.

The place is now neglected and serves no one. For a time, Zenica prisoners grew mushrooms in these cells, writes Patria.
