Čanak: Šešelj's crimes are not for jokes and entertainment

BELGRADE, (Patria) - The President of the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, Nenad Čanak, stated that Serbia has taken on obligations towards the United Nations and the Security Council, which established the Hague Tribunal, and that therefore every decision and verdict of the Hague Tribunal is binding for this country. 

- Therefore, we have nothing more to negotiate about whether a person has been finally convicted or not convicted, whether they committed or did not commit the act for which they were convicted. You may or may not like it, just like any other verdict, but it cannot be discussed - he said in the show „Ćirilica“ on Happy television, commenting on the host's remark that the belief in Serbia is that verdicts from The Hague should not be recognized.

Čanak also expressed his displeasure that the show's host, Milomir Marić, recently hosted the leader of the Serbian Radical Party, Vojislav Šešelj, who was recently convicted of war crimes in The Hague.

- Someone is not convicted of war crimes for parking on a green area, but because they plunged tens of thousands of people and families into darkness. Then it is very insulting to tens of thousands of those people and hundreds of thousands of their friends, relatives, etc., that this is, just like that, part of increasing the viewership of one of the entertainment television channels, as far as I understood...

Do you think it's fun to talk to a war criminal? I don't see any fun in war crimes. Ask the victims, don't ask the perpetrators. It was fun for them, I have no doubt, because they are pathological types, sadists and lunatics... If you play with human weaknesses, don't play with human tragedies. Because, when it comes to war crimes, there are no weaknesses there, only criminals and victims - stated the leader of LSV, adding that Marić should not violate the most basic ethical standards of the journalistic profession for the sake of increasing viewership.

Čanak noted that in 1990, after the census, he conducted an analysis. As he said, it was determined at the time that 24 million people lived in the SFRY, of whom 8.5 million lived in countries that were not their national homelands (Vojvodina and Bosnia and Herzegovina).

- Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia, and Kosovo had some kind of national designation. And how did you think you would cut that, along which exact line would it go without bleeding? It was impossible. That is why the transformation from Yugoslavia into all that we got was so bloody. Because, the more senseless the war, the bloodier it must be, because then you replace the absence of reason with brutality. And then you no longer fight for a reason, but you fight to survive physically, to save your life, and you don't go to the side you believe in, but to the side from which you expect fewer bullets. That's war - he stated.

He also said that the operation Storm began on May 6, 1991, in Hrtkovci because the emigration began there, and it returned as a scourge a few years later in Knin. He also pointed out that on Sunday, May 6, there will be a "commemoration of those times in the worst possible way, by reminding of the rally of the same people who expelled people" from Hrtkovci.

- Forty thousand Croats were expelled from Srem. Expelled, or left, they threw bombs into their houses. And no one knows about it because there was a conspiracy of silence so that nothing like that would be heard - he added.

The leader of LSV also said that whenever someone from Vojvodina asks for money or points out the fact of bad roads and lack of drinking water in water supply systems, they are immediately labeled as wanting to tear the country apart.

As he added, it is only a matter of time when that story will start according to the same recipe for the people of Niš who do not want to give the airport to the state, i.e., when they will be declared "enemies of Serbia because they want to annex Niš to Bulgaria".
