Burzić wrote to parents: Prosecutor's Office working on the case, sanction requested for one police officer

Almost three months after the death of Dženan Memić, the chief prosecutor of the Cantonal Prosecutor's Office in Sarajevo, Dalida Burzić, sent a letter to Muriz and Munevera Memić, the parents of the deceased young man, stating that the Prosecutor's Office of Sarajevo Canton continues to work intensively on shedding light on this case, reports the Patria news agency.

Prosecutor Burzić stated in the letter that the Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation against an unknown person on March 7 this year for the criminal offense of murder, which was also announced to the public. The letter further states that the Prosecutor's Office has so far sent nine requests to the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton for taking actions, issued 15 orders for expert examinations, submitted 15 proposals to the Court for decisions to legally conduct the investigation, and executed nine court orders.
Prosecutor Burzić particularly highlights in the letter the part regarding a possible sanction against an official of the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton, who gave different statements on two occasions, concerning the police officer who first spoke with the sole witness of the accident, Alisa Mutap.

- I determined that the authorized official of the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton, who conducted an interview with Alisa Mutap after the critical event, made an official note on February 9, 2016, and recorded in it that this witness stated she could not say with certainty what exactly happened and that the accident most likely occurred due to a vehicle hitting from behind, as also stated in the information from the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton.

In contrast, when taking a statement from that official of the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton in a record dated March 10, 2016 (after the Prosecutor's Office legally characterized the entire case as murder), the same official stated that Alisa Mutap was 100 percent sure that she and her boyfriend did not sustain injuries from any vehicle, while she does not remember the rest. As it was established that the police officer of the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton described diametrically opposite content of the "same" conversation with the witness on two occasions, the Prosecutor's Office concluded and opined that at that moment the investigation was led in a completely different direction, and justified suspicion was expressed regarding the credibility of this witness's statement - the police officer -  the letter of chief prosecutor Dalida Burzić states.

The police officer of the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton was the only authorized official who immediately after the commission of the criminal offense conducted an interview with the sole witness of the event, Alisa Mutap. According to the previous statements, on April 4, 2016, Burzić requested from the commissioner of the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton to take concrete measures and actions aimed at investigating and possibly sanctioning such conduct by the authorized official. Despite a written reminder, Burzić states, no response has been received to date.
