British Supreme Court rules: Johnson's decision to suspend parliament is unlawful

(Patria) – The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom has delivered a historic ruling that Prime Minister Boris Johnson's decision to suspend parliament is 'unlawful, void and of no effect'.

The Supreme Court ruled based on a unanimous decision of all 11 judges who participated in the process.

President of the Supreme Court Brenda Hale stated that 'the decision to advise Her Majesty to prorogue parliament was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating the ability of parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification'.

Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow announced the resumption of parliament on Wednesday at 11:30.

How Johnson reacted

Asked for comment, Prime Minister Johnson told reporters that he disagrees with the court's ruling but respects it, and that work must continue to achieve the goal, which is leaving the EU on 31 October, 'despite those who obstruct or wish to stop that process'.

Johnson claims that parliament should not 'complicate' the implementation of the people's will.

He also noted that the government is working on reaching a Brexit deal, although the EU recently indicated that no negotiations had taken place on the matter.
