Britain to recognize Palestine despite US pressure

(Patria) - Great Britain will recognize the state of Palestine on Sunday despite pressure from the US and the families of hostages held by Hamas.

British Prime Minister Kier Starmer announced in July that Britain would recognize Palestine in September if the situation in Gaza did not improve.

The BBC reports that Starmer and ministers in his government have concluded that the situation on the ground has worsened in recent weeks and will announce the recognition of Palestine on Sunday afternoon.

Amidst the ongoing military offensive and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where despair and hunger prevail, the British government is alarmed by plans to accelerate the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which could destroy any hope of a two-state solution.

The recognition of Palestine is a major change in British foreign policy after several previous governments held the view that recognition should come as part of a comprehensive peace agreement.

Current British ministers claim they have a moral responsibility to act to maintain hope for a long-term peace agreement.

The announced recognition has been criticized by leading American politicians, who have warned that it would strengthen Hamas and endanger Israel's security.

Republican leaders in Congress, including House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik and Senator Rick Scott, have sent a letter to Great Britain, France, Canada, Australia, and other key countries that have announced the recognition of Palestine.
