Bregu: The majority of attacks on women online occur on social networks

(Patria) - The European Commission recently launched a campaign called #DigitalRespect4Her to raise awareness about online violence against women and promote good practices in combating this problem.

"The majority of attacks on WOMEN online occur on social networks. 45% of Southeast European residents use social networks daily! Governments must seriously consider legal frameworks to STOP virtual, i.e., online violence, without compromising freedom of speech," said Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) Majlinda Bregu.

Internet stalking is an established form of violent behavior, and the Council is ready to assist the region's joint effort to achieve appropriate laws and policies to address this problem.

"We want every woman to feel free to speak online, without any fear. We cannot sit idly by and encourage individuals who cowardly attack women and girls online," said European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Vera Jourova.

The reality is often different: virtual violence spreads through social networks, messaging apps, online forums, video-sharing websites, or video games. Online violence can cause psychological, mental, sexual, and economic difficulties. It can silence women and reduce their online presence.
