Brazilian President Lula da Silva returns to official residence after hip surgery

(Patria) - Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged from hospital on Sunday, two days after successful hip replacement surgery that will allow him to work from home while recovering.

Lula (77) underwent surgery on Friday. Doctors also performed a minor eyelid surgery. He has returned to the official presidential residence in the capital, Brasília, and will work from there in the coming weeks, Lula said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

He had previously said he had been suffering from hip pain since August last year, AP reported.

"Thank you for all the prayers and caring messages. I am recovering to work even more for Brazil",
Lula wrote on X, adding, likely as a joke, that he intends to run a marathon.

A medical bulletin from Lula's doctors earlier on Sunday stated that he was ascending and descending stairs with assistance.

Recovery from hip replacement surgery varies from patient to patient, but most can resume light, everyday activities within three to six weeks, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Many patients initially use a cane, crutches, or a walker until their balance and strength improve to avoid falls that could jeopardize the success of the surgery, the orthopedic organization said.
