(Patria) - Brazil will take over Mexico's diplomatic affairs in Peru, Brasilia announced on Sunday, several months after the Andean country broke off relations with the North American country due to asylum for the former prime minister, Reuters reported.
Lima broke off relations with the Mexican government in early November after former Peruvian Prime Minister Betsy Chavez was granted asylum at the Mexican embassy in that country.
Chavez, the last prime minister of ousted and now imprisoned former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, faces charges of conspiracy related to Castillo's attempt to dissolve Congress in 2022.
In a statement, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had taken over the representation at the request of the Mexican government and with the approval of Lima.
Brazil stated that the representation includes safeguarding the premises of the Mexican embassy in Peru, including the head of mission's residence, as well as its assets and archives.
