Borrell: EU ready to consider measures against Serbia over tensions in Kosovo

(Patria) - The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, stated that the EU is ready to consider "measures" against Serbia if the country does not meet the Union's demands.

“Brussels is closely monitoring whether Serbia is meeting the EU's demands regarding de-escalation of tensions in northern Kosovo, and if it assesses that Belgrade is not respecting them, it is ready to consider introducing measures against the authorities in Serbia,” Borrell said.

Borrell's response to a parliamentary question was published on Thursday, a few days after clashes over the weekend in northern Kosovo in which one police officer was killed.

“It is necessary for the parties to return to the dialogue led by the EU. Both sides have many obligations to fulfill, including the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities,” Borrell said.

Around three o'clock after midnight on September 24, in Banjska, in the municipality of Zvečan, Afrim Bunjaku was killed in attacks on Kosovo police units, while police officer Alban Rashiti was wounded. Several attackers were killed in the police operation. Milan Radoičić from the Srpska Lista is behind the attack, who announced through his lawyer that the Republic of Serbia was not aware of the attack and that he was resigning from SPS.
