Former President of Peru commits suicide during arrest for corruption

(Patria) – Former President of Peru Alan Garcia committed suicide by gunshot when police came to arrest him, agencies report.

Garcia (69) died in a hospital in Lima after doctors unsuccessfully tried to save him.

The authorities that issued the arrest warrant suspect him of taking bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

The day before the attempted arrest, he addressed via Twitter, stating that he was a victim of political persecution and that there was no evidence against him.

Alan Garcia led Peru from 1985 to 1990 and again from 2006 to 2011.

The investigation established that he took bribes from Odebrecht during his second presidential term, in connection with the construction of the metro in the capital, Lima.

Odebrecht admitted that it spent almost $30 million in Peru since 2004 for bribery purposes.
