Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Long Prison Sentence

(Patria) - Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is closer than ever to a prison sentence.

The majority of judges have voted to convict him of attempting a coup, despite pressure from Donald Trump in his favor.

Three out of five Supreme Federal Court judges have voted to convict Bolsonaro, but they can change their decisions by the day the verdict is announced.

Bolsonaro is accused of being the leader of a "criminal organization" that conspired to secure his power, despite his defeat by current leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the 2022 elections.

Bolsonaro could become the first former Brazilian president convicted of an attempted coup, after his supporters stormed the Brazilian Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace on January 8, 2023.

The 70-year-old politician faces a prison sentence of up to 43 years, although the sentence could be modified and reduced to house arrest due to his advanced age.

Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since early August for violating conditions and is under surveillance due to the risk of a possible escape.
