(Patria) - Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an "aggressive form" of prostate cancer that has metastasized to the bones, his office announced on Sunday, Reuters reported.
Biden (82) was diagnosed on Friday after experiencing urinary symptoms, and he and his family are considering treatment options with doctors, the statement said.
"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which
allows for effective treatment," his office stated.
Biden, president from 2021 to 2025, abruptly ended his re-election bid last July, weeks after his lackluster performance during a debate against Republican candidate Donald Trump caused panic among fellow Democrats.
Vice President Kamala Harris took over the candidacy but lost to Trump in November. Biden's physical health and mental acuity had attracted intense media attention even before the debate. At the time of the election, Biden was the oldest person to win a presidential election.
Trump (78) broke that record when he defeated Harris last year.
Some prominent Democrats have recently admitted that it was a mistake to promote Biden as a candidate, given widespread voter concern about his age. Biden lost his son, Beau Biden, in 2015 to brain cancer.
In 2022, Biden revived a program from the Barack Obama era known as Cancer Moonshot, aiming to reduce cancer mortality rates by at least fifty percent in the next 25 years.
