(Patria) - The White House announced yesterday that it will not support any Israeli plans for large military operations in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken clearly expressed the U.S. concern regarding such operations.
Israel bombed Rafah yesterday, a city on the southern border where more than half of Gaza's population has taken refuge.
- Any large military operation in Rafah at this time, under these circumstances, with more than a million, likely a million and a half Palestinians seeking refuge in Rafah, without considering their safety, would be a catastrophe, and we do not support it - said White House spokesperson John Kirby.
Humanitarian agencies warn of an impending catastrophe if Israel carries out its threat to enter Rafah, one of the last parts of the Gaza Strip where Israeli troops have not set foot.
Israeli planes bombed parts of the area yesterday morning, and residents report that 11 people were killed in two houses.
Tanks shelled parts of eastern Rafah, intensifying residents' fears of an impending invasion.
