(Patria) - The White House announced on Friday that it believes Israel will allow humanitarian aid trucks to enter Gaza after a lull amid ongoing fighting between Israel and Hamas militants, but the number of deliveries will likely be reduced, Reuters reported.
White House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby, citing reports from Israel, said that Tel Aviv has agreed to continue the entry of humanitarian aid trucks at the urging of the United States.
But he said that truck deliveries will likely be reduced to tens per day, rather than the hundreds of trucks that entered Gaza daily during the one-week pause in fighting that ended on Thursday.
Kirby said Gaza needs much more aid, but the decision to continue aid deliveries, after strict inspections, "looks like a good sign for the future".
US officials are seeking a continuation of the pause in fighting to extract more hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Kirby said Hamas is to blame for violating the ceasefire.
"It is because of Hamas that this pause has ended," Kirby said.
"The burden is on Hamas," he added.
