(Patria) - U.S. President Joe Biden changed his mind about pardoning his son Hunter because "circumstances changed," the White House said on Friday, Reuters reported.
Biden's pardon of his son on Monday followed after he repeatedly promised to allow the U.S. justice system to act, and a day after President-elect Donald Trump nominated Kash Patel to lead the FBI.
"The fact is that when you think about how the president came to this decision, circumstances changed. They did," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said when asked about the timing of the pardon.
"Republicans said they would not give up... Recently announced Trump nominees for law enforcement said during the campaign that they were eager for retribution, and I think we should take them at their word."
Patel is one of several Trump nominees who have suggested that Hunter Biden's business activities warrant further scrutiny.
The president's son was set to be sentenced this month on charges related to tax evasion and gun possession.
