(Patria) - US President Joseph Biden intends to try to convince his donors that he is capable of defeating Donald Trump in the November presidential election, after his poor performance has frightened many in the party and raised doubts about his physical and mental condition.
Biden's concerning performance in the first presidential debate on Thursday has unsettled many Democrats, who see Trump as an existential threat to American democracy.
Biden's confused behavior led the editorial board of the New York Times to state on Friday that he should withdraw from the race for the top US office.
Democratic donors have privately expressed deep concern about Biden's mental state following the debate.
In private conversations, they have discussed a list of possible replacements, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Some donors said they would pause their financial contributions. They also stated that revenue from Biden's fundraising this weekend will almost certainly be large because tickets were sold and paid for before the debate.
After the debate, Biden showed more energy in his speeches in North Carolina and New York on Friday, saying he believes "heart and soul" that he can perform the duties of president.
His campaign announced that it raised over $27 million on Thursday and Friday, including $3 million at a fundraising event in New York focused on the LGBTQ+ community.
However, Biden still needs to allay the fears caused by the debate after clips and memes mocking him spread on social media, and he must also face public pressure to withdraw from the race.
