(Patria) - US President Joe Biden expressed hope that Iran will refrain from attacking Israel despite the threat of retaliation for the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran, Reuters reported.
Regional tensions have risen following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas's top leader, on Wednesday, a day after Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander of the Lebanese group Hezbollah, which, like Hamas, is supported by Iran, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for Haniyeh's assassination and vowed revenge. Israel has neither claimed nor denied responsibility.
When asked by reporters if Iran would stop, Biden replied on Saturday: "I hope so. I don't know."
Seeking to bolster defenses in the Middle East in response to threats against Israel, the Pentagon said on Friday it would deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the region.
Haniyeh's death was one in a series of assassinations of high-ranking Hamas figures as the war in Gaza approaches its eleventh month, and has fueled concerns that the war in Gaza is escalating into a broader Middle Eastern conflict.
