Biden says Trump should be "politically" jailed as a threat to democracy

(Patria) - US President Joe Biden stated on Tuesday that Republican Donald Trump poses a threat to democracy and should be "politically" jailed, at a Democratic rally in New Hampshire, Reuters reported.

"We have to lock him up," Biden said to applause at the Democratic campaign headquarters in Concord, New Hampshire.

"Lock him up politically. Lock him up. That's what we need to do," he said.

Trump, the Republican candidate and former president, wants to disregard the protections of the US Constitution, Biden said.

"Our democracy is at stake" if Trump defeats Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, he said.

When Trump ran for president in 2016, he repeatedly spoke at rallies where the crowd chanted "lock her up," referring to then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. He did not discourage them from ceasing such chants.

This year, during rallies for Harris, her audience sometimes chants "lock him up," referring to Trump, who has been convicted of 34 felony counts related to the cover-up of hush-money payments to a porn star. He also faces charges for illegally attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

But Harris silences such chants, saying the Department of Justice will handle the matter as she tries to defeat the former president at the ballot box.
